And what a spectacular day it was, with not even the lightning storm at 1.00am stopping the party!

Well done to the first volunteers for my charity calendar for braving it and coming into the studio last week to get their photographs taken. Stella (www.beautybystella.co.uk) and Kat (www.jubileeteam.com) - you were great fun and we got some fantastic images.

I started putting the feelers out early last year about us all getting together to raise some money for a local charity in the style of the original Rylstone Women’s Institute calendar of 1999. And although I initially had a bit of a job persuading the girls they really wanted to remove items of their clothing (in the best possible taste!) for the shoot I now seem to be inundated with people willing to take part – so much so that the calendar will now feature girls on one side and boys on the other.

The calendar will be on sale from October and all proceeds will be going to the Bosom Pals Appeal, run by the Southend Hospital Charitable Foundation. You can read more about the tremendous work they’re doing here http://www.sh-cf.org .

When my friend and I chose Budapest as a destination for a quick getaway we were looking forward to going somewhere completely different outside the usual Euro zone. What we didn’t know was that an Icelandic volcano near Eyjafjallajoekull, which had been dormant for 200 years, had other plans for us and our 3 day break ended with a 5 day hike across 6 countries to get back to the UK.

I think we were sitting on the banks of the Danube having a beer on Friday lunchtime last week (the second day of our trip) when it dawned on us that we had better start making alternative plans to get home rather than risk turning up at the airport on Saturday for the Easyjet flight which was scheduled to leave that evening.

So we joined an ever increasing queue at the train station and felt quite pleased with ourselves that it only took a couple of hours to get booked on a train the next morning to Verona in Italy, via Austria and Germany, where we’d pick up an overnight connection to Paris. All in all about a 28 hour train journey. Piece of cake right? Problem solved right? No.

The first leg of the journey to Verona was reassuringly straightforward and we heard of fellow passengers’ similar plights. But our luck was about to run out as we had no seat reservations for the overnight Verona to Paris sleeper train and no amount of pleading could stop us being ordered off the train late at night, with the prospect of no accommodation booked, and the ticket inspector clearly not interested in helping us out. That was probably the lowest point in the trip as we struggled to comprehend how someone could have been so unhelpful in what was now becoming an international crisis – a jobsworth who we think added another 2 days to our travels.

Fortunately, we eventually found some accommodation and gained a friend that evening, a girl who was travelling on her own from Bucharest and was trying to get back to Dublin. So now there were three of us and we thought we’d hire a car and drive to Calais to take our chances of a crossing there. But there were no hire cars available and the websites kept crashing and we were running out of ideas. That evening was a bit of a turning point as we realised that we just weren’t going to be able to move on the next day and so we resolved to stay another night and enjoy the sights of Verona which is such a beautiful place. And we actually relaxed and had some fun, almost forgetting that we were stranded as we strolled around the city.

Onwards and upwards the next stage of the journey was mapped out by available trains rather than geographical planning and we left Verona on Monday afternoon for an overnight stop in Zurich, and seats booked for Zurich to Paris, via Milan, on Tuesday, and a Eurostar service back to London on Thursday evening.

But the best news was yet to come as my husband had been able to get a return ticket on Le Shuttle with the car and picked us up on our arrival in Paris on Tuesday night, driving us to Arras which is about one hour from Calais for the last overnight stay before making our crossing from Calais to Folkestone on Wednesday morning. Celebration beers were cracked open that night as we reminisced about the events of the previous days.

Looking back now there were loads of high points and only a couple of low ones. We were fortunate enough to have enough funds to repatriate ourselves and family and friends back home who helped out with arranging accommodation from a distance, but I know there are people who have been stuck at airports with no choice other than to stay put and wait for flights to resume.

We were able to get enough information about what was going on by watching BBC World and from people back home but had to make decisions based on what was available at the time rather than the most cost-effective or logical route home.

It’s been an incredible journey, quite literally. We’re all so relieved to be home but in a strange way glad to have had the experience.

Have been so busy on the blog this week I almost forgot to mention my visit to Focus on Imaging, which is Europe's biggest annual imaging show, and a must for any serious photographer. With over 200 exhibitors and all the very latest digital cameras and processing equipment, it's a geek's paradise! It's also a great opportunity to catch up with my suppliers and I always make a bee-line for the Tony Sarlo's stand, for a warm Italian welcome and a glass of something fizzy! The Company is based in Contursi, Italy, and run by Tony and his wife Sandy together with their three sons, Stefano, Andrew and Ashley. Their wedding albums are absolutely exquisite - every one is hand made, book-bound and finished by a member of the Sarlo family, so this ensures an extremely high standard. The Sarlo's have also invested heavily in new technology to lead the way in bespoke digital wedding album design and production. I was lucky enough to visit them in Italy a few years ago and not only got to see the album production first hand, but was also able to sample some fine Sarlo hospitality.

Manager Mée Wolff explained that despite the intensive makeover and skill of the waiting and kitchen staff, nothing is being left to chance. Mée explained: “We wanted to get the new Manoly off to the right start and enjoy another 25 years of good fortune, so we invited a trio of Buddhist monks to perform a complex and very beautiful traditional blessing ceremony.” So I went along yesterday morning to photograph this ancient ceremony for them, as well as the 'Private Viewing' yesterday evening where the Mayor of Southend, Councillor Brian Smith, performed the official opening.

I hadn't set foot inside the place for years and that was only in the downstairs area, so I was quite taken aback to see the splendid facilities they have available upstairs for weddings, events, business meetings and entertainment. The Kursaal is a fully licensed and approved venue for marriage and civil partnerships and Catherine and Matt showed me the two rooms they have available for their ceremonies, as well as the 200 people capacity function suite. So if you're looking for a wedding venue with some local history this could be the place for you. Originally opened in 1901, the Kursaal became famous for its shows, attractions and amusements and during the1950's/1960's it enjoyed it's heyday. Now we can all enjoy the building again following it's renovation and restoration at the turn of the 21st century and it still retains some of the original features, such as the glass ceiling in the function suite.

And this time, as well as being part of the winners' prize giveaway, I was asked to judge in the first semi-final heat. So along with friends, family and fans of Vacant Touch, Mike Summers, The Jons and Crash Mansion, we braved the cold of Southend seafront yesterday evening to decide on the two bands to make it through to the finals on 31st October. Wow, what a tough call that was as all of the acts were hugely talented (and rather impressively ALL local boys), but Vacant Touch and The Jons made it through so congratulations to them and good luck for the finals boys

A major restoration project in 2003, sponsored by various funding grants, saw The Waverley returned to the original 1940s style with which she was built. So it was a fantastic opportunity for me to capture some images of this amazing piece of history, as well as the sites along the coastal route to London.
Southend Radio - Kiss the Bride competition (from Jo Curtis Photographer)

Doesn't sound too difficult does it? But for four hours?? Well that's exactly what Toni & Luke did when they entered the Southend Radio and Cliffs Pavilion competition for the chance to win a wedding earlier this year. A panel of judges whittled down the competition entrants to ten couples who went forward to a public vote, and the resulting five couples with the most votes took their place in the final on 15th March at the Cliffs Pavilion Wedding Fair. With such a great prize on offer no-one was prepared to give in easily and all five couples stayed firmly glued to each other for an incredible four hours! And with numb lips all round the only way to decide the winner was a nail biting 'Mr & Mrs' style quiz round which Toni and Luke stormed their way through.

It was good to see them again this week and catch up with all that's been happening since the competition. It's now less than two months to go until the big day and the wedding plans are coming together nicely. With such a stunning cliff top setting we're looking forward to getting some great photographs on the day and with Luke taking charge of the Halo 3 themed top table (Xbox fans amongst you will get that!) there are going to be some interesting wedding album images.

As a photographer the last thing you want the subject of your photoshoot to be is wooden. Unless, it's wood of course. I met Monica from The Genuine Wood Company at a Women in Business Network meeting a month or so ago and I was fascinated to hear all about her product - she imports seasoned hardwood from Namibia in Africa for use in wood log burners and fireplaces, cooking on barbecues and fire pits, and wood carving. Monica is going to be updating her website images shortly to capture in more detail the quality of the wood so I visited her in Rochford, armed with my camera, and was able to see (and feel) for myself how this very dense wood with zero percent moisture content lights a mean fire!

I had high expectations of this one-day seminar with renowned international photographer Kenneth Linge and not for one second during the day was I disappointed. Kenneth's photographic accolades are too numerous to mention, but when he moved to the United States in 2000 he left Norway as the 90's most award-winning photographer in Scandinavia. So to have the opportunity of a hands-on full educational with him was fantastic - he is such an inspirational, charismatic and down-to-earth guy! One of Kenneth's mantras is "if you think you know it all you know nothing" and that really struck a chord with me. It's so important as a photographer to keep pushing the boundaries and innovating - I picked up a few little gems from Kenneth which I'll be trying out on my clients in future photoshoots so watch this space....

Well, I could have danced all night (my feet had different ideas though) at last night's Ladies Burlesque fundraising evening (for Bonnie) which was put together by Shambhala Yoga Studios and hosted at Tiffins Restaurant in Southend. A gathering of over 100 women, looking glamorous and resplendent in pink feather boas, were entertained with a Burlesque dancing lesson, hot curry buffet and dancing until late. Helen, our Burlesque instructor, then showed us how it was really done - something the young barmen and waitors at Tiffins no doubt found hugely entertaining, if the jaw popping stares were anything to go by! I'm guessing the rotating tassles were the icing on the cake!! A hugely successful and fun night - well done to Shambhala and Tiffins for all their hard work. For further information on Helen's Burlesque dancing classes you can reach her on 07967 204392.

Tucked away in Thorpe-Le-Soken, this family run venue boasts beautiful gardens and complete privacy. I always like to take my couples to the wedding venue before the big day so we can walk around together and practice a few poses - it helps them to alleviate any pre-wedding photography nerves and gives us the chance to get to know each other.

For those of you who haven't heard of them, they came runner up in Southend Radio's 'Battle of The Bands' last summer and have since been storming the music scene up and down the country as well as on their home turf, Southend. I've seen them playing live a couple of times now, including the gig at the Barfly in Camden on Wednesday and they rock!
